This is a Simple Chain or a Pyramid. It’s made clear in the fiction early on that there’s a particularly desirable reward available at the end of the story. And there’s a hefty Toll charged for each stage. So the player is paying and paying, but will get the reward at the end.
- Make it clear early on that there is only a chance that the player will get the reward, which is very desirable indeed. There will be a challenge on some quality that the player can increase, so that they have some way of maximising their chances.
