This is a StoryNexus content design pattern. Other patterns can be found on the Content Design Patterns page.

Raise a progress quality with one branch. When the progress quality is high enough, use a different branch to spend the quality in return for a significant bit of fiction and possibly a reward quality. This is good for very simple narratives – get some clues, then solve a mystery. But it often feels grindy. It’s better with some elaboration.

  • Have more than one branch that grants the progress quality.
  • Have several branches that grant the progress quality, and have some more difficult than others, or some have tolls, or reduce the quality on a failure. This enables the player to use various strategies to gain the progress quality.
